Meet Tsunami Paddlers

My first day with Tsunami

Amanda –
I was invited by a friend and I was just going to give it a go for the one morning.  It was July, it was cold.  I dressed in warm stuff and hoped for the best.
I saw all these fit athletes in their spandex and panicked, but hiding behind the Australian team were the Tsunami folk, in old jumpers and board shorts and a few in club colours. I calmed down.
I got a lovely welcome and while the others warmed up, someone spent time with me to show me the basics of paddling. So when I climbed in the boat and sat up the back I had some idea what to do.  I was told to do my best –that hasn’t changed- and if I felt too tired to pull my paddle in and take a break.  I had to do that a few times that first morning.  I had only just joined a gym six months before but had never competed in a team sport in my life.  Just one morning and I was hooked.
The next day I ached all over – but it was a good ache.  A month later I could do a whole session and not pull in my paddle.
That was over three years ago and I kept coming. Just once a week at first but when I realised I wanted to contribute more to the team I started training two and three times a week.
Tsunami – you come for the sport and stay for the friends.

WHY TSUNAMI?
In all honesty when we were looking for a club to try out paddling, I sent 3 identical emails to 3 different clubs, and Wendy was the first to reply...the rest as they say is history! When I mentioned to Wendy in my first email that I was hearing impaired, she said, 'no problems.' That was almost a year ago....

WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT DRAGONBBOATING?
How much fun we have, but also the work out after a training session. And the fact that everyone is welcome regardless of age, or ability! Now, what I don't like about paddling....swaps on the fly!!!

WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES?
Cooking, reading, going to the movies.

IF YOU COULD CHOOSE TO DO ANYTHING FOR A DAY, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
To go Hot Air Ballooning

WHAT MAKES YOU LAUGH THE MOST?
Having a few drinks, and seeing how much I can annoy my family!!!

WHO WOULD YOU WANT TO BE STRANDED ON A DESERTED ISLAND WITH?
Just me and George Clooney, Amal is not invited......

DO YOU HAVE A SPECIAL TALENT?
Don't know if its special or not, but my girls say that I make every situation okay.

ONE THING YOU WOULD LIKE TO LEARN MORE OF IN DRAGONBOATING?
I'd love to learn how to sweep, my ears don't work very well, but my voice on the other hand works perfectly!!!

WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT DRAGONBBOATING:
Telling people that I do Dragonboating and getting the response, 'OMG thats so cool!'

WHY TSUNAMI:
Because its probably the only Club that would take on 3 Greeks! And Wendy was the first to respond to Mum's email.

WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES:
Going to the movies, drawing and annoying my boyfriend with my interests in architecture.

IF YOU COULD CHOOSE TO DO ANYTHING FOR A DAY, WHAT WOULD IT BE:
Spend a day with David Copperfield and pick his brain.

WHAT MAKES YOU LAUGH THE MOST:
Not what but who....my sister.

WHO WOULD YOU WANT TO BE STRANDED ON A DESERTED ISLAND WITH:
My best friend Natasha. She always knows what to do in every situation and shes from a big island called FIJI! She would know where to find food!!!

DO YOU HAVE A SPECIAL TALENT:
My Mum would say being able to talk underwater with a mouth full of wet cement.

ONE THING YOU WOULD LIKE TO LEARN MORE OF IN DRAGONBOATING:
To just keep getting better, and maybe one day to be able to stroke in a race.

PS: Lianna was awarded "Rookie of the Year" at our End of Season bash in June this year.
